<p>Acquiring environmental knowledge may not change environmental awareness and behavior, thereby causing the knowing-doing gap. Therefore, this study proposed the intervention of “self-activation persuasive communication” to cultivate university students’ pro-environmental awareness and behavior. Through this intervention, participants collected and organized environmental information and the reasons and methods for changing environmentally harmful behaviors to develop behavior change communication schemes; afterward, they identified social fields with harmful behaviors to implement the schemes. A randomized social experiment with pre-test post-test control group design assessed the intervention effects on environmental awareness and travel behavior in environmentally harmful and pro-environmental mode use. Results indicated that the intervention enhanced awareness of the environmental consequences of using private vehicles and implementation intention to reduce private vehicle use and, in travel behavior, decreased and increased car use and cycling, respectively. Hence, self-activation persuasive communication could be applied to facilitate pro-environmental awareness and behavior while imparting environmental knowledge.</p>

Applying a self-activation change approach to modify university students’ environmental awareness and behavior
