<p>The UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme established Biosphere Reserves to balance sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, social and economic advancement, and cultural values. The distinct biological and cultural wealth of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve led to its designation as the first Himalayan Biosphere Reserve. This paper explores the reserve’s history and current research trends, determining the interests of the scientific community, which shape its management efficacy. A total of 459 scholarly publications were discovered through the literature search from standard databases, namely ‘Google Scholar’, ‘Scopus’, ‘Springer Link’, ‘Pub Med’, ‘JSTOR’, ‘Bio-One Complete’, and ‘Shodhganga’ for the collection and preparation of the review datasets utilizing a variety of keywords ‘nanda devi biosphere reserve’, ‘nanda devi national park’, ‘valley of flowers national park’, ‘central himalaya’, ‘protected area’, ‘uttarakhand forests’, ‘biosphere reserve research’, etc. The search efforts were conducted from January to March 2024, generating several papers, Ph.D. dissertations, technical reports, book chapters, and books. Of these, 313 were utilized for content analysis to determine previous research interests, and 112 were examined for current research trends by identifying subject disciplines, landscapes covered, and techniques adopted based on the availability of abstracts. There was a noticeably skewed, uneven, and concentrated distribution of research disciplines, ecosystems examined, and geographical coverage of study regions, where ecological research is still dominated by floristic studies. Future research priorities should reflect a comprehensive perspective on biodiversity, ecosystems, socio-ecological management, development, and monitoring. The findings will guide academics and conservationists to broaden their scientific interests and assist forest management agencies in implementing strategies balancing socio-economic development with biological protection while ensuring long-term landscape sustainability.</p>
