Perceptions and practices of peach producers in Fez-Meknes region and evaluation of environmental impacts using an environmental indicator of pesticide pressure

Fez-Meknes region plays a crucial role in Moroccan agriculture, particularly in the production of industrial crops, fruits, vegetables, and olive oil, and is distinguished by its intensive peach cultivation. This study examines the agricultural practices of peach producers in the region as well as the environmental impact of the pesticides used, assessed through the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) model. Among the 20 active ingredients identified, 62% are fungicides, 25% are insecticides, and 8% are herbicides. Analyses reveal that drip irrigation practices are the most common, and while all farmers conduct soil analyses prior to planting, annual analyses are performed only in large agricultural domains (> 100 ha). Conversely, water analyses are never conducted, and foliar analyses are not carried out unless deficiencies are detected. According to the EIQ values, several examples of best agricultural practices can be evaluated and presented for farmers of Fes Meknes region. These examples will help to demonstrate alternative ways of controlling certain target pests harming the local peach crops, while choosing between products that have the same target but different classifications, with one having a lower environmental impact than the other. Based on the EIQ values, best management practices can be evaluated and implemented. To reduce the use of pesticides in peach crops, several strategies need to be implemented, including biological control, which limits the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, the surveyed farmers acknowledge the importance of biological control for reducing chemical inputs but highlight its ineffectiveness on a larger scale due to a lack of training and knowledge regarding application techniques, dosages, and frequencies, as well as labor-related challenges. Some small-scale farmers (less than 4 hectares) employ alternatives such as nettles and horsetails to combat pests. Our findings emphasize the necessity of extension services to our farmers on the adoption of integrated peach production.
