Study on the spatial effects of fisheries exports and carbon emissions in the Asia Pacific Region

The increasing global focus on reducing carbon emissions has prompted an examination of the environmental impacts of international trade, particularly fishery exports. This study investigates how fishery exports affect carbon emissions in Pacific Rim countries, considering both direct and indirect spatial effects. The primary aim is to analyze the spatial dynamics between fishery product exports and carbon emissions using data from 2011 to 2020 across the Asia–Pacific region. To capture these dynamics, we construct four spatial weight matrices—geographic adjacency, geographic distance, economic distance, and linguistic geography—and employ both static and dynamic spatial Durbin models to empirically assess these relationships. The results demonstrate that fishery exports have significant spatial spillover effects, influencing both domestic and neighboring countries' carbon emissions. Specifically, the impact of exports varies between processed and unprocessed fishery products, and between freshwater and marine fisheries, reflecting the different levels of energy consumption and production processes involved. Additionally, the study reveals that the effect of fishery exports on carbon emissions is more complex than initially expected, involving both direct effects within exporting countries and indirect effects transmitted through neighboring countries’ emissions and exports. These findings underscore the importance of considering regional interdependencies in policy formulation, offering valuable insights for policymakers aiming to balance trade, environmental sustainability, and carbon emission reductions.
