<p>Based on the Self-Determination Theory and the Theory of Planned Behavior, this study explores how self-determined efficacy influences university students' intentions regarding environmental conservation. With the growing severity of environmental issues, understanding the psychological mechanisms that motivate individuals to participate actively in environmental conservation has become increasingly important. Therefore, this study collected data from 338 university students and employed Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to establish a model linking self-determined efficacy with environmental conservation intentions. The results revealed a significant positive relationship between self-determined efficacy and environmental conservation behavior, demonstrating its vital role in motivating university students to engage in conservation activities. Furthermore, utilizing Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), this study conducted an in-depth analysis of the complex mechanisms by which self-determined efficacy influences environmental conservation behavior. The significant impact of interpersonal relationships on subjective norms, attitudes toward environmental conservation, and perceived behavioral control among university students is particularly noteworthy. This highlights the importance of strengthening interpersonal connections to encourage students' participation in environmental activities. This study not only deepens our understanding of the role of self-determined efficacy in environmental conservation intentions but also provides valuable insights for educational interventions, suggesting that enhancing interpersonal interaction and support can promote greater involvement of university students in environmental conservation efforts.</p> Graphical abstract <p></p>
