The path towards a sustainable and green university: An analysis of Islamia University Bahawalpur, Pakistan
摘要
Higher education institutions are increasingly recognized globally for creating an environmentally sustainable society. Green and sustainable universities optimize the environmental impact of their daily activities and encourage sustainability in curriculum and research. However, research on sustainability in higher education is limited to specific sustainability factors and has yet to include the broader integration of green practices. This study, therefore, fills this gap by analyzing green initiatives taken by The Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB), Pakistan, in all dimensions of environmental sustainability. The IUB created a well-structured environment management plan to become a green university. The most prominent initiatives include plantation, green infrastructure, energy and water conversation, paper and plastic use reduction, and sustainable mobility. These initiatives have decreased the ecological footprint from 8.3 in 2021 to 7.2 in 2022. However, the IUB needs further targeted and coordinated efforts to reduce the footprint significantly.
