<p>This article uses the comprehensive demonstration policy of e-commerce in rural areas as a quasi-natural experiment for rural e-commerce development. Using data from Chinese counties (2010–2021), we establish a multi - period DID model to evaluate how rural e - commerce construction affects county - level urban - rural integration. Research has found that rural e-commerce construction is significantly positive at the 1% level. Mechanistic analysis indicates that the development of rural e-commerce can promote the flow of labor to rural areas and increase investment in rural regions, thereby indirectly driving the integrated development of urban and rural areas in the county. Heterogeneity examination indicates that the boosting impact of rural e-commerce establishment is particularly pronounced in central and western regions with lower economic development, areas deficient in transportation infrastructure, and locales with advanced Internet services. This article not only helps to scientifically identify the causal relationship between the construction of rural e-commerce and the integrated development of urban and rural areas at the county level, but also provides valuable references for promoting sustainable urban-rural development in China.</p>
