Leaf blight of onion, caused by Botrytis squamosa, is a disease that requires frequent fungicide sprays under Brazilian conditions. We evaluated the efficiency of thymol and carvacrol in controlling Botrytis leaf blight, under field conditions, during the 2023 and 2024 crop seasons. Leaf sprays of thymol, carvacrol, fertilizers and fungicides were applied weekly, and the final severity (percentage of diseased leaf area) was evaluated. In both years, thymol sprays significantly reduced disease severity when compared to the control (untreated). In 2023, thymol treatments resulted in a percentage of diseased leaf area that ranged from 4.44% to 5.97%, while the control had 10.85%. In 2024, thymol resulted in severities between 4.57% and 5.23%, while the control had 16.26%. Carvacrol did not show consistent results for the two years of testing. Thymol seems to be an alternative to integrate the management of Botrytis leaf blight in the future, however, further studies are still needed to understand the mode of action of this molecule on B. squamosa and/or onion plants.

摘要
