Synergistic effects of wettable powder of Trichoderma and fungicides in controlling phytophthora and corynespora leaf fall diseases in rubber

A combination of wettable powders of Trichoderma strains and fungicide was more effectively in controlling the rubber tree disease under greenhouse and field trials than the treatments of wettable powder of Trichoderma strains or fungicide alone. The combination of wettable powder of T. harzianum KUFA0437 and KUFA0436 with metalaxyl displayed potent fungicidal effects against the disease, causing 73% and 68% reduction of Phytophthora leaf fall disease, respectively. The applications of wettable powder of Trichoderma strains alone displayed low fungicidal activities against the disease, causing 29%–36% disease reduction, whereas the treatment of metalaxyl alone reduced the defoliation caused by Phytophthora leaf fall disease by 50%–54%. The combination of wettable powder of Trichoderma strains KUFA0760 and KUFA0762 with carbendazim exhibited significantly effective control activity, achieving a 55%–66% reduction in the incidence of Corynespora leaf spot disease under field conditions. In contrast, the application of the wettable powder of Trichoderma strains alone resulted in low fungicidal activities against Corynespora leaf spot disease, whereas the application of only carbendazim displayed a 40%–45% reduction in disease severity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the application of a combination of biocontrol agents with fungicides against rubber diseases under field trials.
