Bio-priming seed treatment for biological control of damping-off in solanaceous vegetable crops

Damping-off disease is a major constraint in nursery raising of solanaceous vegetable crops. Chemical management of damping-off disease is effective but due to problems of resistance and environment degradation, biological approaches are encouraged. Seed biopriming is one such novel biological approach that pertains to a seed treatment procedure wherein bio-inoculants are applied to seeds, while ensuring controlled hydration conditions. The present study investigated the efficacy of seed biopriming with consortia of biocontrol agents (BCAs) and extracts of native medicinal plants in managing damping-off disease in nurseries and thereby improving various seed quality attributes. Aqueous extracts of Roylea elegans at 10% concentration was most effective against damping-off disease with mycelial inhibition of 36.78% followed by Melia azedarach and Datura stramonium with inhibition of 36.38, 30.78%, respectively under in vitro conditions. Also, the biological mixture of Roylea elegans and Trichoderma harzianum was found most effective against damping-off disease in naturally infected conditions with a reduction of about 48.05% in seedling mortality. Our study, therefore marked the potential of seed biopriming with biological mixtures as an eco-friendly alternative of use of chemicals in disease management.
