<p>Pollination by bees is essential for ecosystem balance and agricultural productivity. <i>Apis mellifera</i>, the main pollinator, is used in the apple orchards in southern Brazil. However, fungicides application during flowering exposes bees to the potentially harmful products with unknown effects on them and their colonies. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate effects of the fungicides Captan<sup>®</sup>SC and Zignal<sup>®</sup>, used in apple orchards, on the hygienic behavior and <i>Varroa destructor</i> infestation of <i>A. mellifera</i>, as well as strength of the hives. The bioassay was composed of four treatments, corresponding to the diets (Control, Captan, Zignal and Mixture) with three replications in the studied colonies. The colonies were evaluated at 0, 60, 90, 180, and 240 days for hygienic behavior (HB) and <i>V. destructor</i> index. The strength of the hives was evaluated at 0, 45, 135 and 180 days. The results demonstrated a decrease in HB, an increase in the <i>V. destructor</i> index and a reduction in the strength of the treated hives, showing a time-dependent effect of the treatments. The mixture treatment showed a reduction in HB of 18.4% between times 0 and 60 days after the start of the bioassays. Colony strength was also more affected by simultaneous exposure to fungicides, reducing the brood area and adult population by 60% and 40%, respectively, compared to the control treatment. Our results indicate that the doses of Captan<sup>®</sup> SC and Zignal<sup>®</sup> fungicides, recommended by the manufacturers for apple crops, have a sublethal effect on <i>A. mellifera</i>, causing multigenerational losses.</p>
