<p>The potential role of early childcare and education providers (ECEPs) in early detection of autism is increasingly recognized. In this study, we conducted an online survey of French ECEPs to gather information on their current practices, perspectives, and perceived difficulties. The survey form included closed- and open-ended questions on ECEPs and childcare center characteristics, perceived role and attitude towards early detection, use of screening tools and perceived difficulties in early detection practices. A total of 300 ECEPs provided usable data and were included in analyses. Although the majority of ECEPs acknowledge the importance of early detection of autism, only a third report that these practices are implemented in their childcare centers. The main challenges reported were: lack of knowledge and skills, feasibility issues such as time constraints or lack of professionals, and being disconnected from the healthcare system. A latent class analysis revealed four distinct groups of ECEPs based on their perceived difficulties related to early detection practices, indicating that ECEPs are unlikely to be a homogeneous population when it comes to implementing early detection practices of autism in childcare settings. Although ECEPs demonstrate significant interest in the early detection of autism, several challenges hinder the effective implementation of these practices in childcare settings. Addressing these obstacles will be crucial to ensuring that early detection practices can be successfully integrated into childcare settings.</p>
