摘要

Current scholarship emphasizes the need to provide K-12 students with increased access to and instruction with nonfiction, which is particularly true for the youngest learners. Additionally, many early childhood educators have questions about selecting and sharing nonfiction in early childhood settings. The purpose of this study was to examine quality expository picturebooks to analyze how the written text, visuals, and design elements could support young learners. This content analysis reveals three categories: Traditional Nonfiction and two types of expository literature, which we have named Concepts in the Round and Playful Participation. Each category is defined and described using three salient textual examples. Findings indicate the nuanced ways texts from each category effectively capitalize on children's innate curiosity and drive for understanding. These deceptively simple books offer a sophisticated landscape of carefully crafted texts with varied yet powerful invitations for engagement, fostering literacy skills and scientific knowledge in developmentally appropriate and genuinely captivating ways.
