Reproductive traits and their variation of the amphibious mudskipper Scartelaos histophorus (Valenciennes, 1837) across two coastal zones of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta

The mudskipper Scartelaos histophorus inhabits intertidal mudflats of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta, where coastal habitats are strongly shaped by riverine inputs. This study compared the reproductive traits of this species between two contrasting coastal zones: the northern Hau River zone (NHR), which is heavily influenced by major riverine freshwater and sediment discharge, and the southern Hau River zone (SHR), which lacks substantial riverine influence. A total of 1,436 specimens were collected monthly from August 2024 to July 2025. Males showed continuous spermatogenesis year-round in both zones, whereas females spawned seasonally. Female spawning peaked in August–October in NHR and extended from August to November in SHR. Length at first maturity (Lm) was greater in males (≈10 cm total length) than females (≈8.9 cm) and was similar between coastal zones. Absolute fecundity (AF) was 2,769–19,021 eggs/female in NHR and 3,579–23,508 eggs/female in SHR, while relative fecundity (RF) was higher in SHR. AF showed positive relationships with both total length and body weight in both coastal zones. Overall, the results indicate that coastal environmental variation is associated with both shared and zone-specific reproductive traits of S. histophorus, including differences in female spawning timing and relative fecundity between coastal zones.
