Identification of a Prionobutis microps Weber, 1907 larva using morphological and molecular approaches leads to a new distribution record for Eastern Arabian Sea, India
摘要
This study reports the first confirmed occurrence of the small-eyed loter, Prionobutis microps (Gobiiformes: Butidae), in Indian waters, based on a larval specimen collected from the Patalganga River estuary along the Eastern Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, India. Previously reported from North Australia, Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and more recently from eastern India, this finding extends the known biogeographic range of P. microps to the Indian subcontinent. A detailed morphological characterization of the larval stage is presented for the first time, offering new ontogenetic insights into this poorly understood gobioid genus. Species identification was corroborated through DNA barcoding using partial mitochondrial Cytochrome C Oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences, which have been deposited in the NCBI GenBank database. The integrative approach combining larval morphology with molecular diagnostics demonstrates the efficacy of such methods in detecting cryptic estuarine taxa. This record underscores the ecological importance of Indian estuaries as reservoirs of undocumented ichthyofaunal diversity and highlights the need for enhanced larval sampling and molecular surveillance in tropical coastal ecosystems.
