Reproductive biology and reproductive cycle of female pike perch Sander lucioperca (Teleostei, Percidae) in Morocco

The pike perch Sander lucioperca has become an increasingly significant commercial species in the freshwater bodies of Morocco. However, fishing activities targeting this species have had a negative impact on its biomass. The reproductive cycle and gonadal development of Sander lucioperca were studied using both macroscopic and microscopic approaches over a period of 12 months (from October 2020 to September 2021) in the Al Massira Reservoir. The gametogenesis of this species occurs during autumn, winter, and early spring, with single spawning in spring between April and May, followed by a period of sexual rest in summer (June–August) with synchronous development of the oocytes, and sexual maturity is reached early. Gonado-somatic and hepato-somatic indexes showed variations related to the reproductive cycle. The monthly evolution of the condition factor K confirms the existence of a strategy in the utilization of energy inputs. The mean absolute fecundity reached 214,989 vitellogenic oocytes per female, and the mean relative fecundity was estimated at 277 vitellogenic oocytes/g of mature female. These biological data are crucial for assessing the status of the stock of this species.
