First report on the biology of Gangetic gagata, Gagata gagata (Siluriformes: Sisoridae), from a coastal river in Bangladesh

An investigation on the biology of Gangetic gagata, Gagata gagata, in the Andharmanik River in Bangladesh’s mid-southern coast was carried out for the first time to fulfill the research gap regarding the sex ratio, size structure, diet, and reproductive phenology of this species. A total of 392 specimens with a mean (± SD) of 13.55 ± 2.06 cm total length and 26.96 ± 7.59 g body weight were collected from March 2023 to February 2024. The total female-to-male ratio (1.28:1) deviates considerably from the expected 1:1 sex ratio. In the coastal river of Bangladesh, the weight-length relationship of the females, males, and combined sex of Gangetic gagata shows positive allometric growth. The condition factor values for female, male, and combined sex were 1.13 ± 0.26, 1.02 ± 0.19, and 1.08 ± 0.23, respectively, which were > 1 in all instances, suggesting that fish in the population are in good health. The relative length of the gut and its contents demonstrated Gangetic gagata’s carnivorous dietary habits. This fish has an absolute fecundity ranging from 2672 to 38,234. The gonadosomatic index, Dobriyal index, and frequency of mature gonads were used to identify the spawning season, and these indicators showed that this species spawns a single batch of eggs each year, with September and October being the peak spawning months. These results establish a baseline for this species that will be crucial for assessing the population condition of this species and for creating effective management plans for the fish stock from Bangladesh’s coastal rivers and neighboring waterbodies.
