<p><i>Johnius</i> Bloch,&#xa0;1793 is a genus of the family Sciaenidae, made up of a group of small to medium-sized fishes, which are all endemic to the Indo-West Pacific Ocean. The present study reports on the first known occurrence of the genus <i>Johnius</i> in the Atlantic Ocean. A total of 44 specimens were collected between 2017 and 2023 in the Gulf of Maranhão, on the coast of the state of Maranhão, in northern Brazil. The morphological analysis of the specimens supported the identification of two possible species – <i>Johnius</i> cf. <i>belangerii</i> and <i>Johnius</i> cf. <i>carouna</i>. The region has a number of shipping terminals and intense maritime traffic from the Indo-Pacific region, which may have favored the local introduction of the two <i>Johnius</i> species via the discharge of ballast water. Further research is needed across a much larger sampling area to determine the invasive potential of the two <i>Johnius</i> species, and their possible establishment in the coastal waters of the northern Brazilian coast.</p>
