Augmented reality as a tool for cultural heritage education: comparing interactive guides and traditional methods

The integration of augmented reality (AR) technology in cultural heritage tourism offers new opportunities to enhance educational experiences. However, limited research has focused on evaluating its actual impact on learning outcomes and user experiences in the context of historical towns. This study aims to develop and assess an interactive AR-based mobile guide system and compare its effectiveness with traditional paper-based maps in facilitating cultural learning. Employing a quasi-experimental design, 73 participants were divided into an experimental group using the AR system and a control group using traditional maps to investigate Qiantong Ancient Town, China. The study utilized pre- and post-tests, experience questionnaires, behavioral intentions surveys, and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to evaluate learning outcomes, user experience, and technology acceptance. Results indicate that the AR guide system significantly improved cultural learning outcomes, enhanced participants’ experiences in education, entertainment, aesthetics, and escapism, and positively influenced their behavioral intentions and willingness to recommend. The findings suggest that AR technology can provide an engaging and effective medium for cultural heritage education and tourism, serving as a valuable reference for future research and practice. This study highlights the importance of integrating innovative technologies in cultural heritage tourism to foster deeper cultural appreciation and sustainable development.
