In the digital age, the expansion of online platforms has changed many aspects of education, including political and ideological learning. Higher education institutions are increasingly utilizing digital media resources in their colleges and schools, as they see studies demonstrating the ability of digital media to foster student engagement with political issues. This study investigated the relationship between digital media and the ideological and political education of students at higher education institutions, using a mixed-methods approach, while using quantitative and qualitative data collection instruments, including questionnaires and interviews. Even though quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 485 students, 47 students participated in in-depth interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS software, and qualitative data using thematic analysis. Results show that digital media or platforms fundamentally improve exposure to different political ideologies in comparison to non-digital education. Further, exposure to digital media resources increases the likelihood of participation in public life and activism among students in the academic context. The contribution of this study to extant literature involved an extremely detailed examination of the role of digital media in the dual capacity of education and polarization of students. It also outlined the dimensions of digital media’s role in students’ political socialization and the norms of political dialogue in the institution of higher education. This study also revealed that digital media presents a more inclusive and diverse discourse with students than face-to-face discussions, improves students’ understanding of global political matters, and leads to polarization regarding students’ understandings of political issues.

摘要
