摘要

Although there are several studies that examined the use of large language models for providing feedback for writing skills, it remains unclear how students perceive the combination of feedback generated by AI tools and feedback generated by instructor. To address this gap, this study examined perceptions of Saudi English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners about the effectiveness of feedback generated by ChatGPT in comparison to instructor’s feedback in developing writing skills of these learners. The study employed mixed-method design. The study recruited 112 Saudi EFL learners to participate in an advanced writing course. Their writing assignments were evaluated using two types of feedback (instructor’s feedback and ChatGPT’s feedback). To elicit their perceptions and preferences, a survey was carried out. Results demonstrated that students felt that the instructor’s feedback was more useful than ChatGPT’s feedback. On the other hand, ChatGPT’s feedback was immediate and accessible. Based on the findings, the study suggested that AI tools need to be used to complement instructor’s feedback.
