<p>COVID-19 triggered a worldwide shutdown of educational institutions, leading to the adoption of virtual modalities of learning to enforce social distancing in practice. This sudden transition has however posed considerable challenges for special educators tutoring students with special educational needs. This study investigates how effective online teaching was for students with special needs during the pandemic-induced lockdowns in the state of Kerala with special stress on the effectiveness of the White Board project. This study utilized both qualitative and quantitative research methods, employing structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews for data collection. The study found that the experimental White Board project assisted considerably in alleviating certain degrees of cognitive dissonance triggered by mainstream means of virtual tutoring in the special education sector. However, this pilot project faced hindrances due to limited trials and special educators lacked adequate equipment to manage online classes. They also struggled to develop individualized educational plans (IEP) for their students without the comfort of in-person contact. The study also proposes recommendations for improving modes of virtual education in the future.</p>
