<p>In scholarly accounts of voluntary risk-taking, the idea of edgework constituting resistance has been explored in relation to a range of activities and contexts. Yet, there remains conceptual ambiguity around the extent to which edgework can be understood as resistance, and if it is determined to be so by actors themselves. In this critical review of existing research, I explore the potentials of edgework as an immediate and context-specific form of emotional resistance, as well as edgework’s conceptual limitations. As I argue, for moving towards a theoretically robust conceptualisation of ‘edgework-resistance’ what is necessitated is an awareness of edgework’s paradoxical character, the foregrounding of intersections of class, race and gender, and the avoidance of externally-defined ascriptions of resistant intent.</p>
