<p>This article examines the evolving nature of prison order within Chilean prisons amidst the health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on more than 90 semi-structured interviews conducted with prisoners, prison officers and prison authorities, the article explores the measures taken to maintain order in prison settings, the changes in the relationship between prison officers and inmates, and the resulting shifts in prison order and legitimacy. The shared sense of adversity brought on by the pandemic and the collaborative strategy implemented by prison authorities to secure prison order, generated a sense of equality that secured rule compliance and fostered legitimacy. However, the findings expose the transient nature of this novel prison order, as it gradually deteriorates with the waning of the health emergency and encounters resistance from both prison officers and incarcerated individuals. This underscores the persistent challenges associated with the custodial logic of prisons and its capacity for reproduction.</p>
