An effective approach to enhance sensor networks performance

The densification of Internet of Things (IoT) sensor networks or interchangeably called Ultra-dense networks (UDNs) provides enhanced coverage and improve capacity to meet the ever-growing demand of data. In UDNs, user experiences high data rates, low latency, and many other significant features; however, with the continuous growth of users/nodes, the UDN networks in future will face multiple significant hurdles. Particularly, scalability, higher packet drop ratio due to interference, cost, etc. are some of the critical challenges which overall affect the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the applications. In our work, we propose a simple and effective approach to enhance the QoS by means of alleviating the Packet Drop Ratio or Packet Loss Ratio (PDR or PLR) in highly dense IoT networks. The approach is rigorously tested (on multiple scenarios) using a reliable simulation environment and our results indicate better network performance. Our results provide meaningful insights in the design and implementation of highly-dense IoT architectures. Further, they expand our knowledge to allow us to structure the size of a UDN-IoT sensor networks with respect to the QoS requirements.
