Melting flows: Russian climate change science in the global research landscape
摘要
This paper aims to analyze the rapidly growing contribution of Russian scientists to global climate change studies. We raise questions about the visibility and integration of Russian science in global research agendas. Our study bases on metadata for scientific publications authored by Russian researchers from 2010 to the end of 2023. We examine publication patterns and citation impact across national and international journals. Russian climate-change related research became increasingly integrated into global networks, with a significant rise in publications in international non-mainstream journals. The bibliometric analysis shows a noticeable thematic asymmetry between Russian journals and international mainstream journals. However, while thematic overlaps with global trends are evident, Russian journals still suffer from low international visibility, even when translated into English. The ongoing geopolitical context poses a threat to Russia’s participation in critical climate change research, particularly in areas like Arctic environment studies, highlighting the need for sustained international collaboration despite political barriers.
