<p>This study presents a method for the production of semi-dried microfibrillated cellulose powder from birch kraft pulp using a high temperature twin-screw extrusion process. The production of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) powder at high solid content (40–50%) was performed in a single pass in the extruder. The resulting MFC powder shows a remarkable 56% nanosized fraction, a degree of polymerization of 262 and a crystallinity index of 80.2%, underlining the preservation of cellulose structure throughout the process. While acknowledging the challenges associated with aggregates and large fibers presence, the high solid content emerges as a potential remedy, addressing transport and storage concerns associated with MFC.</p> Graphical abstract <p></p>
