Degrees of Persuasion: Ethical Communication in Climate Fiction Films
摘要
This article examines the persuasive appeals in climate fiction (cli-fi) films and explores their implications for ethical climate communication across scholarly, practitioner, and pedagogic domains. Using a novel mixed-methods approach that integrates manual cross-annotation, natural language processing, and hierarchical clustering via principal component analysis, we analyze 35 cli-fi films to identify 17 persuasive appeals that cluster into 4 recurring communication strategies: Eco-Social Immersion, Power-Driven Action Encouragement, Emotion-Centric, and Inclusive Narration Strategy. Our classification highlights that inclusive, reflexive narratives can engage audiences without replicating ethically problematic persuasive patterns. More broadly, the article reframes the relationship between art and advocacy in the Anthropocene, arguing that ethical climate communication balances correctness and persuasiveness.
