Knowledge synthesis on trends and gaps of mangrove research in india: a comprehensive bibliometric analysis

In recent times, increasing climate change and anthropogenic activities have heightened global interest to conserve and manage the direct (fisheries, and timber resources) and indirect (coastal protection, shoreline stabilization) services provided by the mangroves. India, being ranked ninth globally in mangrove cover, has experienced mangrove loss similar to the global average (40% by 2020). Yet, mangroves in India have been extensively studied and reviewed owning to intricate linkages with millions of coastal communities for the sustenance. However, a comprehensive synthesis of research trends and knowledge gaps remains lacking. The present study employs PRISMA methodology to analyse publication trends (1900–2023) through a systematic bibliometric analysis of peer-reviewed articles (PRAs) from Google Scholar and ResearchGate. Boolean criteria and Snowballing method identified 1070 PRAs since 1963, averaging 18 PRAs per year, surging to 41 post-2004 tsunami. A total of 4204 indexed keywords were found across PRAs with Diversity, and RemoteSensing, emerging as dominant themes. A total of 2426 unique authors contributed in 539 journals with KandasamyKathiresan and KakoliBanerjee being most prolific investigators, and contributions spanning researchers from 32 countries. Indian mangrove research is unevenly distributed; broadly matching mangrove cover nationally but not at the state level. The east coast (62.4%), west coast (30.3%), and Andaman & Nicobar Islands (7.3%) received attention proportional to their cover (57%, 31%, 12%). In contrast, global patterns often show countries with extensive mangrove cover—often economically less developed—tend to have lesser mangrove-related studies, while research is concentrated in wealthier nations with smaller mangrove areas. These disparities highlight the need for innovative, inclusive, and collaborative research methodologies that bridge geographic and economic gaps. Further, the steady rise in mangrove-related PRAs in the recent decade underscores their regional and global significance. This broad synthesis informs research trends of Indian mangroves and suggests effective decision-making for mangrove conservation.
