Pace and shape of life history differences among introduced lizards in Hawaii

There is more than one way to be a successful invader in terms of life history traits. Theory suggests that fast life histories allow colonizing populations to rapidly escape the risk of stochastic extinction, while slow life histories can buffer against poor environmental conditions in the new range. In addition to these pace of life traits, the timing of important life history events during the lifespan (shape of life traits) may also influence establishment success. Life history traits can be quite variable within species, and can also be affected by the invasion process itself. We measured individual somatic growth, survival, and reproduction under controlled field conditions in three co-occurring species of introduced lizards in Hawaii. Our goal was to determine whether these successful invaders differ in their life history strategies along one or both of these axes, and consider the ramifications of any trait differences for the establishment and continued spread of these taxa. We documented three distinct life history strategies in terms of pace of life: Anolis sagrei grew the fastest and had the lowest survival, Phelsuma laticauda grew the slowest and had the highest survival, and Anolis carolinensis was intermediate. We also measured population growth and abundance. By the end of one year, both the fastest and slowest species achieved densities that were approximately twice as high as the intermediate species. We also found differences along the shape of life axis: Anolis carolinensis only reproduced during half the year, while the other species reproduced year-round. Both of the Anolis are important invaders in the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific, and P. laticauda is increasingly spreading as well. Our results provide insight into the conditions under which the different species may be likely to establish and spread, and are relevant to understanding species interactions in this novel community.
