Community and species-level responses to two invasive small cichlids in neotropical reservoirs

Disruptions caused by omnivorous-detritivorous invasive species can be significant and impact on key ecological services, but they are often less studied than those caused by predator species. In Neotropical reservoirs, the effects of such species remain poorly understood. This study focuses on two non-native cichlids, Geophagus sveni and Satanoperca setepele, both popular in the aquarium trade, and introduced into multiple reservoirs in southeastern Brazil. We hypothesized that their invasion altered fish assemblages and negatively affected native competitors in the Upper Paraná River basin. Using 23 years of fish monitoring data from four reservoirs, we evaluated how the abundance of both species relates to native competitors, diversity indices, and species composition. We found no significant correlations between the abundance of invasive species and diversity indices. However, the abundance of Geophagus iporangensis, a typical native and closely related species, was negatively correlated with the abundance of G. sveni. Furthermore, G. sveni became dominant in most reservoirs, accounting for 6% of the variation in the fish fauna composition, while S. setepele explained 2%. These findings indicate that the G. sveni influenced changes in the dynamics of fish assemblages, probably through competition mechanisms. Its high ecological plasticity (including trophic opportunism, adaptability, and tolerance) likely enhances its competitive capacity to establish and spread in novel environments. Our results underscore the need for further investigation into the roles of non-predatory invasive fish species in shaping freshwater ecosystems, particularly in regions of high biodiversity and ecological vulnerability.
