The Art of Seeing: Cézanne’s Sainte-Victoire and the Phenomenology of Vision
摘要
This paper will explore aspects of the life and work of the painter Paul Cézanne. We will also consider how color contributes to the visual experience in his paintings. We intend to explore how research in neurobiology (in Oliver Sacks) approaches some questions about visual experience that can be related to Cézanne’s painting. We will analyze the relevance of visibility as a puzzle that the painter deals with. We will use Merleau-Ponty’s work as a theoretical basis, in particular the Phenomenology of Perception and Eye and Mind. Finally, we will speculate about how Cézanne dealt with the landscape of the Mount Sainte-Victoire, which is fundamental in his paintings, and we will suggest why he painted it countless times.
