Architecting digital bridges: digital global connectivity strategy and international competitive advantage construction for platform enterprises

Digital platform globalization is characterized by a core strategic paradox: the institutional differences that enable cross-border connectivity simultaneously generate formidable barriers to expansion. Prevailing theoretical perspectives, which emphasize linear relationships and isolated dimensions, cannot adequately explain how digital connectivity strategies and multidimensional contextual differences combine to create competitive advantage. To address this gap, this study develops a configurational framework grounded in the Composition-Based View (CBV) and employs a qualitative comparative analysis of 40 Chinese platform enterprises. We examine how strategic configurations of digital global connectivity interact with a tripartite compositional context encompassing market, regulatory-institutional, and technological differences to produce international competitive advantage. Our analysis reveals multiple equifinal paths to success, demonstrating how distinct combinations of connectivity architecture, relational strength, and contextual conditions produce competitive advantage in global markets through nonlinear interactions. This study contributes to international business theory by advancing a configuration-centered paradigm, establishing the CBV as a robust theoretical lens, and identifying empirically validated strategy-context configurations. For practitioners, it provides a diagnostic framework for aligning digital strategies with specific compositional contexts, emphasizing strategic flexibility in global expansion.
