The role of social media platforms in shaping menstrual health literacy among adolescent girls: a scoping review

Social media platforms have become major sources of health information for adolescents, including menstrual health education. While these platforms offer accessible and relatable spaces for learning and stigma reduction, there are concerns regarding misinformation, content credibility, and narratives created by influencers. This scoping review examines the nature, accuracy, and thematic framing of menstrual health information available through social media platforms targeting adolescent girls.
MethodsA scoping review was conducted following the Arksey and O’Malley framework and Joanna Briggs Institute recommendations. Searches were performed across PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and CENTRAL databases for studies published between 2020 and 2025. Eligible studies examined menstrual health content on social media platforms used by adolescents. Data extraction included study characteristics, content themes, credibility assessments, and stigma-related messaging. Findings were synthesized narratively and organized using structured evidence tables.
ResultsNine studies met the inclusion criteria. TikTok emerged as the most frequently analyzed platform, followed by YouTube and Twitter/X. Social media provided accessible peer support, normalization of menstrual experiences, and opportunities for health education. However, misinformation, oversimplified physiology, and influencer-driven content were common. Content generated by healthcare professionals demonstrated higher credibility but represented a small proportion of available material. Themes included menstrual stigma, personal narratives, cycle tracking trends, and digital health literacy challenges.
ConclusionSocial media plays a role in shaping menstrual health literacy by promoting both accessible education and misinformation. Increasing healthcare professional engagement, improving digital health literacy, and developing culturally sensitive evidence-based content should be considered for improving adolescent menstrual health outcomes.
