The effect of environmental awareness on climate change worry and waste management in nurses: A cross-sectional study
摘要
The study aimed to assess the impact of environmental awareness on climate change worry and waste management among clinical nurses.
BackgroundClimate change and waste management are growing global concerns. Nurses play a vital role in promoting environmental sustainability in healthcare. This study explores how environmental awareness affects their climate change worry and waste management practices.
MethodsThis descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 362 nurses at a leading hospital in Turkey. A post-hoc power analysis was performed to assess the adequacy of the sample size. Data were gathered using the Descriptive Characteristics Information Form, Nurses' Environmental Awareness Scale, Climate Change Worry Scale, and Solid Waste Management in Healthcare Institutions Scale. The data were analyzed using parametric and nonparametric tests, as well as correlation, and regression analysis. The study has adhered to the STROBE checklist for reporting.
ResultsThe mean score of the Environmental Awareness Scale was 171.97±26.23, the mean score of the Climate Change Worry Scale was 44.98±11.68 and the mean score of the Solid Waste Management in Healthcare Institutions Scale was 44.68±11.94. The analysis revealed a positive correlation between climate change concern, environmental awareness, and solid waste management.
ConclusionDeveloping strategies to enhance nurses’ environmental awareness may also improve their knowledge and consciousness regarding climate change and waste management. Therefore, it is important to implement strategic measures aimed at increasing nurses’ environmental awareness, raising their climate change consciousness, and improving their waste management practices.
