Introduction and aim <p>Steatotic liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction (MASLD) is a disorder characterized by the accumulation of lipids in hepatocytes and may be associated with metabolic, genetic, and environmental factors. Recent studies highlighted that disturbances in the circadian timing system caused by shift work can impact on the liver, developing MASLD. The risk of MASLD has increased due to globalization, which exploits 24-h services and disregards its effects on workers’ health. The aim of this systematic scoping review was to assess the existing gaps and potentialities in this area of research.</p> Subject and methods <p>This study was carried out using the “methodological framework” and the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews. The Population, Concept and Context (PCC) framework was used to define the eligible studies for the present review: Population — shift workers; Concept — relation between shift work and steatotic liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction (MASLD); Context — observational studies and clinical trials in the work environment. Two electronic databases were consulted: PubMed and Biblioteca Virtual em saúde (BVS), using Mesh terms, Decs terms and text words. The publication date filter in both databases was set from 2014 to 2024.</p> Results <p>Nine studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. Alternating night shifts were identified as independent predictors of MASLD in five studies, while monthly night shifts were identified in one. One study associated the disease with variables other than alternating shift work — such as total duration of the shift, sleep restriction, and food consumption during the night shift — and one mentioned that shift work was an aggravating factor for workers who already had hepatic steatosis.</p> Conclusion <p>The cross-sectional studies presented suggested an association between shift work and MASLD and the longitudinal studies, a causal relationship between the variables. However, the mechanisms of this association have not yet been clarified and more studies are needed in this area.</p>
