<p>Scientific narratives must be mindfully crafted to reflect the limitations of available information and accurately define the complex landscape of regulatory systems. We agree that the painted woolly bat (<i>Kerivoula picta</i>), as well as other bat species in international trade, may warrant increased conservation attention and applaud those who dedicate themselves to furthering the cause. Unfortunately, the study conducted by Coleman et al. (<CitationRef CitationID="CR8">2024</CitationRef>) does not provide the empirical evidence needed to inform science-based regulatory decision making in the wildlife trade context. We review inadequacies and errors in their analyses and interpretations. Our Commentary is intended to help ensure the accurate translation of science into policy, as well as to provide general guidance for the accurate assessment of wildlife trade data. Ill-informed wildlife trade decision making risks misdirecting limited resources, eroding trust in conservation science and scientists, and having adverse impacts on stakeholders.</p>
