<p>Determining the sex of Black-headed Gulls can be challenging because of the absence of distinct sexual dimorphisms. However, accurate sex determination can be achieved by using linear discriminant functions derived from morphometric measurements. In this study, we developed a linear discriminant function to predict the sex of wintering gulls in Zagreb, Croatia. Morphometric measurements of gulls differed across months during the wintering period. To investigate the underlying causes of these differences, we analysed the winter movements of all Black-headed Gulls caught in Zagreb. Our findings suggest that these differences could be attributed to variations among the populations. During the wintering period, our study area hosts gulls that arrive early in winter and stay throughout the period, those that spend the start of winter in Hungary before moving to Zagreb, and transient gulls that use Zagreb as a stopover site.</p>
