<p>Urbanization often exerts adverse effects on biodiversity. However, some animals exhibit behavioral plasticity and are able to adapt to the challenges presented by urbanization. We conducted a systematic survey to identify the nocturnal roosting sites of the red-billed starling (<i>Spodiopsar sericeus</i>) in Haikou urban area, Hainan, south China and found that they exhibit a preference for nocturnal roosting on high-voltage power pylons (towers) located at urban intersections. Analysis of the environmental variables of powerline towers used nocturnal and non-nocturnal roosts revealed that traffic volume and building height around the pylons were important factors influencing the nocturnal roosting preferences of the red-billed starling. Anti-predatory strategies may elucidate the preference of starlings for roosting sites with high traffic volumes, while the trade-off between predation risk and human poaching could account for their predilection for low buildings surrounding the roosting habitats. A comprehensive understanding of the negative and positive impacts of urban facilities (including roads and electricity pylons) on animals is crucial for enhanced planning towards eco-friendly urban development.</p>

Powerline pylons at city crossroads as nocturnal roosting sites for urban birds
