Field Evaluation of Commercial Sugarcane Varieties in Jamaica for Resistance to Diatraea saccharalis Fab. (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)

The sugarcane stalk borer, Diatraea saccharalis, is a major economic pest in Jamaica. Historically, synthetic insecticides have shown limited efficacy in suppressing species populations, and sustainable management has relied on the release of natural enemies. Currently efforts are shifting towards identifying and developing borer-resistant sugarcane varieties for use as independent control strategies or for incorporation within integrated pest management programs. This study assessed borer resistance of commercial sugarcane varieties in naturally infested fields during plant and ratoon crops across two agroecological zones in Jamaica. Nine varieties were grown in four replications at each location. Bored internodes and damage incidence on 100 stalks were recorded 12 months after planting. Brix (% soluble solids), POL (% sucrose) and apparent purity (POL as % of Brix) were also determined and correlated with the percentage of bored internodes. The results indicated that the resistance characteristics of two varieties (BJ8783 and BJ78100) were dependent on the agro-ecological zone in both plant and ratoon years, while three varieties (BJ7504, BJ7938, and BJ9702) were the most susceptible regardless of the agro-ecological zone over the two crops. Interestingly, there was no significant correlation (p > 0.05) between juice quality parameters and percentage bored internodes in both zones. The results underscore the importance of screening across multiple locations, identifying plant characteristics that are responsible for borer resistance, examining the influence of environmental factors on resistance, and defining the economic injury level. Continued evaluation of cultivar resistance to sugarcane stalk borer is important to the development of effective integrated pest management strategies.
