This study examines how socio-economic factors and farm-level characteristics influence apricot producers’ decisions to take out agricultural insurance. The research is based on face-to-face surveys conducted with 95&#xa0;producers in Malatya province, Türkiye’s leading apricot production region. The results show that producers allocate 81.13% of their agricultural land to apricot cultivation and obtain an average of 8,655.6 kg of fresh apricots and 1,288.1 kg of dried apricots per hectare (ha). In particular, 74% of producers stated that they had taken out agricultural insurance. The analysis reveals that taking out insurance is influenced not only by socio-demographic factors such as age, marital status, household labor capacity, and income diversity, but also by structural farm characteristics such as land fragmentation and productivity. According to the findings, being married, increased productivity, and an increase in the number of parcels reduce the likelihood of producers taking out insurance. Conversely, advancing age, an increase in the number of people working in agricultural production in the household, and having non-agricultural income are factors that increase the likelihood of taking out insurance. Therefore, strengthening agricultural insurance systems is critical to ensuring the resilience of the apricot sector and enabling producers to sustain their livelihoods with greater confidence in the face of environmental and economic challenges.</p>

摘要

Agricultural insurance plays a crucial role in stabilizing farmers’ incomes by protecting them from natural disasters and market fluctuations. It encourages the adoption of modern farming practices and supports sustainable rural development. Given that apricot production is highly sensitive to climate variability, agricultural insurance serves as an essential safeguard against the growing risks posed by environmental uncertainties. This study examines how socio-economic factors and farm-level characteristics influence apricot producers’ decisions to take out agricultural insurance. The research is based on face-to-face surveys conducted with 95 producers in Malatya province, Türkiye’s leading apricot production region. Therefore, strengthening agricultural insurance systems is critical to ensuring the resilience of the apricot sector and enabling producers to sustain their livelihoods with greater confidence in the face of environmental and economic challenges.
