Modulating Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) Cv. ‘Chandler’ Fruit Traits, Biochemical Composition, and Post-harvest Attributes with Plant Growth Regulators in Jammu Sub-tropical Climate

Foliar application of plant growth regulators (PGRs) is a widely adopted practice to enhance productivity and fruit quality in strawberries. The present study investigated the effects of gibberellic acid (GA3 and GA4 + 7), oxalic acid, and paclobutrazol on growth, yield, biochemical composition, and post-harvest attributes of Fragaria × ananassa Duch. cv. ‘Chandler’ under subtropical conditions. A total of 13 treatments—GA3 (20, 40, 60 ppm), GA4 + 7 (10, 20, 40 ppm), oxalic acid (2, 4, 6 mM), paclobutrazol (50, 75, 100 ppm), and a control (distilled water)—were applied as foliar sprays 30 and 45 days after transplantation. GA4 + 7 at 20 ppm significantly improved fruit morphology (length 4.87 cm, diameter 3.06 cm, weight 22.39 g) and biochemical quality parameters, including total soluble solids (TSS; 9.48°Brix), TSS:acid ratio (13.73), total sugars (7.80%), reducing sugars (4.97%), ascorbic acid (65.45 mg/100 g), and anthocyanin content (0.21 mg/100 g), while reducing titratable acidity (0.69%). Oxalic acid at 4 mM minimized physiological weight loss (5.64%) and extended shelf life by 4.45 days under ambient storage. Overall, GA4 + 7 (20 ppm) enhanced fruit growth, yield, and biochemical quality, whereas oxalic acid (4 mM) improved post-harvest retention.
