Impact of Preharvest Bagging on Fruit Physiology and Quality of Mango (Mangifera indica L.) Under Subtropical Conditions

Preharvest fruit bagging in mangoes improves the color, appearance, and production of spotless, pest- and disease-free fruits for both domestic and export markets. This study aimed to optimize the fruit bag material and timing of bagging for improved mango fruit quality. Four types of fruit bags—double-layer brown/black bag (FB1), single-layer white bag (FB2), single-layer black bag (FB3), and single-layer blue bag (FB4)—were evaluated for their performance using the mango varieties ‘Dashehari’ (V1) and ‘Amrapali’ (V2). As compared to the control, the FB1 bagged fruit of both ‘Dashehari’ and ‘Amrapali’ mango had higher acidity (27.27% and 19.04%, respectively), better fruit firmness in mature (15.28% and 14.63%, respectively) and ripe (23.01% and 45.04%, respectively) stages, as well as better peel color in mature fruit (L, 52.75; a, −2.05; b, 37.33 and L, 52.05; a, −2.61; b, 36.82, respectively). The incidence and severity of shoulder browning were not reported in FB1 fruits. Moreover, the incidence and severity of anthracnose at the postharvest stage were low in FB1 fruits of both ‘Dashehari’ (1.67% and 0.42%, respectively) and ‘Amrapali’ (7.5% and 1.25%, respectively). Preharvest bagging with the double-layer brown/black fruit bag improves firmness and quality, leading to the lowest incidence of postharvest diseases in both ‘Amrapali’ and ‘Dashehari’ mango under subtropical conditions. Preharvest bagging of fruits can significantly reduce the incidence of anthracnose and shoulder browning as well as the pesticide load; moreover, it can promote the uniform development of attractive colors without compromising taste, besides improving shelf-life. Thus, high-quality production of mango using FB1-like bags enables growers to achieve acceptance in local markets at premium prices and offers opportunities for export.
