Canopy Management Through Root Pruning and Girdling in Different Pear Cultivars Trained on a Y-trellis System

To maintain a balance between vegetative and reproductive growth and harness the benefits of high-density planting, a field study was conducted at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, Punjab, India, during the period 2022–2023. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of canopy management practices on plant morphophysiological parameters, fruit yield, and physicochemical fruit quality attributes of pear cultivars ‘Patharnakh,’ ‘Punjab Beauty,’ and ‘YaLi’ trained on a Y-trellis system. Treatments comprising trunk girdling (TG), sub-limb girdling (SLG), root pruning (RP), and their combinations along with a control (untreated) were applied at the initiation of new seasonal growth. The treatments SLG, SLG + RP, and TG + SLG significantly reduced vegetative growth parameters (annual increment of shoot length, diameter, internodal length, number of water sprouts, pruned wood weight, leaf area, and leaf area index) of pear cultivars compared to the control. Girdling and RP treatments reduced leaf relative water, total chlorophyll, and macronutrients content; and they substantially improved carbohydrate levels in vegetative portions (leaf, bark, spurs). These alterations in physiological attributes improved fruit yield and quality attributes such as fruit size, production of A‑grade fruits, juice total sugars, titratable acid, ascorbic acid, total phenols, and antioxidant activities. It is concluded that SLG and RP practices in low-chill pear cultivars significantly control plant growth while enhancing fruit yield and quality parameters.
