Forchlorfenuron for Quality Fruit Production: A Bird’s-Eye View

Cytokinins (CKs) are a group of phytohormones that play an important role in shoot and root development, stress tolerance, and nutrient uptake. Synthetic CKs are gaining popularity because of their easy accessibility and qualitative performance. Possessing CK-like properties, forchlorfenuron is highly effective in enhancing yield-attributing parameters such as fruit set, fruit retention, and fruit size by promoting cell division and increasing cell number. In addition to yield, qualitative aspects such as total soluble solids (TSS), sugars, color, astringency, volatile substances, and seedlessness are also influenced by its application in many crops, including apple, apricot, grape, kiwi, persimmon, and sweet cherry. Forchlorfenuron plays a role in extending the postharvest shelf life of fruit by maintaining fruit firmness, delaying the maturity of the tree through suppression of ethylene activity, and increasing calcium uptake. The resides of this chemical stay in much smaller quantities for very short periods in fruit as well as in soil, which supports its use in the fruit industry as an environmentally friendly substance. Forchlorfenuron also has a key role at the molecular level by upregulating genes such as phosphoglucomutase (PGM), FBA 3, citrate synthase (CS), and thioredoxin H‑type protein, which are responsible for glycolysis, carbon fixation, titratable acidity, and detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS), respectively. This study can help researchers as well as farmers by providing scientific knowledge regarding the use and technical principles behind each phenomenon.
