Effect of Multi-coloured Fly Traps on Yield and Physicochemical Quality of ‘Kinnow’ Fruits

‘Kinnow’ mandarin accounts of 62% of the total citrus fruit cultivation in India, but its production is often badly affected by fruit fly infestations in the orchards, causing lower quality produce. Although multi-coloured fly traps are recommended for sustainable pest management and improved yields, their impact on the nutritional and sensory quality of fruits has yet to be explored. To assess this, an experiment was conducted using five different coloured traps viz. yellow, red, green, black, and transparent, which were installed in ‘Kinnow’ plots with 8‑year-old trees. Among the treatments, yellow-coloured traps were found most effective in catching fruit flies and resulted in the highest number of marketable fruits (346.8), followed by transparent traps (321.4). In contrast, the control plots, were highly infected and had the lowest number of marketable fruits (257.2). Fruits from the yellow trap plots had improved physical qualities with maximum fruit weight (171.9 g), peel weight (33.7 g) and juice recovery (64.5%). Similarly, biochemical attributes of fruits such as total soluble solids (TSS) (13.5%), total sugar content (8.8%) and TSS:acidity (13.6%) were also found to be highest in yellow trap plots, accompanied by the lowest physiological weight loss (2.0%) on the 7th day of storage and a minimum titrable acidity (0.98%). Additionally, sensory parameters, including fruit colour, shape, firmness, and overall acceptability were also scored maximum in yellow traps (9) followed by transparent traps (8), while fruits from the control plots received the lowest (6.6) sensory scores.
