Genetic Variability in Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) for Floral Traits and Fruit Quality Attributes in Eastern Tropical Region of India

The present study was conducted to evaluate jackfruit genotypes from the eastern tropical region of India for their floral traits and fruit quality with the aim to identify promising accessions. Significant variation was observed in number of bearing footstalk, female spike, male spike, and sex ratio. The number of fruits in a tree ranged 6.24 to 94.21, with an average of 37.89. The average number of fruits on trunk, primary branch, secondary branch and tertiary branch was 5.51, 15.16, 10.32 and 6.90, respectively. The average fruit weight of jackfruit accessions was 4.26 kg, with bulb weight of 2.15 kg, flake weight of 22.97 g, flake content of 27.13%, rind content of 52.01%, seed content of 15.28%, flake seed ratio of 2.18 and soluble solids content of 23.20 °Brix. Principal component analysis revealed substantial variability accounting for 68% of the total variation. First principal component (PC1) exhibited highest magnitude of variability (39.47%) followed by PC2 (8.25%) and PC3 (7.92%). Cluster analysis grouped the accessions into five distinct categories, confirming their diverse characteristics. Three accessions (IIHR-B-J-34, IIHR-B-J-29 and IIHR-B-J-25) were found highly promising in terms of flake content, flake quality and yield potential, whereas IIHR-B-J-30 and IIHR-B-J-33 were found promising for processing industry owing to their large fruit size, high flake content and moderately firm bulbs.
