Characterization of Virulent Strains of the Citrus Canker-Associated Pathogen in the Northern Region of West Bengal

Citrus is an important fruit crop and grown in varying tropical or subtropical regions of the world. It has enormous therapeutic value. Although citrus orchards are held in great esteem, their present status is threatened by a number of problems, in which citrus canker is considered to be the first cause in the large list of bacterial diseases of citrus trees. Different forms of citrus canker have been documented based on host range, level of aggressiveness and geographical origin. Therefore, the most virulent strain should be identified for further studies and to identify the local varieties that are resistant to it in the local climatic condition. In this regard, symptomatic samples of citrus canker were collected from different districts of the northern part of West Bengal. A total of 10 isolates were isolated and subsequently used to inoculate the susceptible local variety to identify the virulent strains among them. Five of the isolates were found to be virulent in both the first and the second year. Further, they were used for characterization and observation of molecular diversity among them. Five virulent strains were shown by molecular characterization to be Pantoea spp., which are associated with causing canker disease. Of these five virulent strains, one strain was found to be most virulent (showing disease increase percentages of 59.390% in the first year and 48.883% in the second year) under this local climatic condition. This can be helpful in identifying the resistant local varieties that can be used by farmers in the future.
