The Impact of Farmers’ Social Networks on the Technical Inefficiencies in Hazelnut Production

The primary objective of the study was to ascertain the levels of technical efficiency of hazelnut farms, and the variables affecting technical efficiency and inefficiency in hazelnut production. The data employed in the research were obtained from questionnaires with 132 hazelnut farmers in Ordu province, Türkiye. The Cobb–Douglas production function was utilised to ascertain the production function of hazelnut farms. Social network analysis was employed to examine the social networks of hazelnut farmers, and stochastic frontier analysis was used to analyse the factors affecting efficiency and inefficiency. The research results indicated that hazelnut farms in Türkiye are not operating at maximum efficiency, suggesting a potential for enhancing average hazelnut production by 23.5% without requiring additional inputs. The analysis further revealed that the technical inefficiency levels of hazelnut farms are influenced by the educational attainment, agricultural income and social capital of the farmer. In order to reduce the inefficiency of hazelnut farms, support should be provided to farmers over a certain age and with insufficient formal education using non-formal education techniques and providing continuous education opportunities. Finally, it is recommended that significant informal actors within farmer social networks be supported with technical information on hazelnuts, as this approach has the potential to accelerate the reduction of inefficiency on hazelnut farms.
