Analysis of Long-Term Trends in Apple Cultivation and its Productivity in the State of Himachal Pradesh (India) from 2001–02 to 2022–23

A significant pattern of Himachal Pradesh’s economy is derived from horticulture. The state’s temperate horticulture is rapidly growing due to favourable agro-climate conditions, which are typified by the growing dominance of apple farming. An analysis of the state’s long-term production pattern and the regional growth of apple farming has been attempted in the study. A significant increase of 145.39% has been seen in apple cultivation concerning the area between 2001–02 and 2022–23. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for area, production, and yield shows an increase of 1.84, 2.80, and 0.94%, respectively, in this time series data. According to the decomposition model study, the area effect (16.67%), yield effect (57.31%), and interaction effect (26.02%) all contribute significantly to apple production. The increase in apple production is primarily driven by both yield and area expansion, with a smaller but notable contribution from their interaction. Climate change has also aided the state’s changing pattern of land usage. Over the years till 2022–23, Apple’s production and productivity instability were high at 32.26% and 33.02%, respectively. Therefore, government policy intervention and the development of pre-and post-harvest technology are urgently needed to make a stable increase in this sector’s production and yield.
